Jenny Persson, Professor at the Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University, Sweden, and her research team with Professor Anette Gjörloff Wingren have published a paper on the development of an AI-technology for prediction of treatment response of colorectal cancer.
This team is studying how cancer metastases can be effectively treated; within their innovative research, modern technology and Artificial Intelligence tools play an important role. This project, which was funded within Horizon 2020, focuses on the use of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence tools to predict not only the risks of cancer spread, but also whether cancer will respond to specific treatments. Gene-mutation-based algorithms have been developed as biomarker classifiers to predict treatment response with better precision than the current predictive factors, which lack biomarker tools for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Colorectal cancer ranks among the types of cancer which are the deadliest and the number of new cases of colorectal cancer metastases have been progressively increasing. As aforementioned, as there are no enough biomarkers to predict which patients may develop a high risk of metastasis, early detection of the disease (which is necessary in order to provide patients with effective treatment) is difficult in many cases. The technologies that have been developed within this research serve as important instruments which can facilitate earlier diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
